Youth Ministries- Sunday School & Confirmation Classes
Spaghetti Meal Service Project/ Fundraiser
On Wednesday, March 6, we will need “all Confirmation hands on deck” to help with the evening Spaghetti Meal — from set-up, cooking and serving, to clean-up. Following the service that evening, we will not hold a Listening Circle. Thank you, Confirmation families, for putting this fundraiser on your calendars. All proceeds will go to our up-coming 2024 Faith & Fun Summer Trip.
Confirmation Lenten Meal Schedule
The following families are asked to help out on Wednesday nights with serving and cleaning-up after the soup suppers. If you can’t help out on the day you’ve been assigned, please look for a replacement family and then let the office know of the change. You can always recruit other family and friends to help out! Suppers start at 5:00 pm and worship begins at 6:00 pm.

CONFIRMATION MINISTRY CHANGES
This year, we are experimenting with offering two options for Confirmation classes — a Sunday morning and a Wednesday evening format. Families will need to choose which format will work for them. Sunday classes are from 10:30-11:30 am, and on Wednesdays we meet from 6:00-7:00 pm. All classes will meet in the third floor classroom. Here is the October schedule:

WHAT DOES ‘EXPERIMENTING’ MEAN?
We are going to try this Sunday/ Wednesday model out for a while. If it doesn’t work, we’ll try something else out. We’re making this option available only because we have had parents tell us that their children have other commitments on Wednesdays and that Sundays will work better for them. If only one or two kids are coming to one option, we will most likely discontinue it.
CONFIRMATION IS CLASSES
When you think of Confirmation, you probably think of Confirmation classes, and you should. Attending classes is a big part of the Confirmation ministry in every Lutheran parish. We want our students to learn more about the Bible (Year A), grow into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ (Year B), and know the Lutheran tradition and teachings (Year C). When we gather for Confirmation, we are gathering to learn. While we learn, we have fun. But just because we’re having fun doesn’t mean we’re not doing important work, or that this is a drop-in youth group. So parents, make sure your child is coming to the classes.
While it’s wonderful that your kids sometimes invite a friend or want to bring someone with them, please remember that these are classes for kids in grades 6+ who are registered. The pastor cannot be responsible for unregistered youth, younger siblings, etc.
Please note that we want you to choose an option: Sunday OR Wednesday – and not to float between the two. However, if you commit to Sundays and you miss, you can come to the next Wednesday class. If you are going to miss a Wednesday, you can plan ahead and come to the Sunday class. That’s why the classes are numbered, and the Sunday theme is repeated on Wednesday. Do not come to two of the same numbered classes.
CONFIRMATION IS MORE THAN CLASSES
If you are registered for Confirmation here at First Lutheran, you are agreeing to be part of the Confirmation ministry. That means more than coming to the Sunday or Wednesday classes. Each student will participate in the 12 yearly classes and the 6 midweek Lenten events (meals, worship, and small groups). Every student is required to serve as an acolyte 12 times each year in worship. Every student is required to complete 12 hours of service each year in the parish/ community. Every student will participate in the community life of the ministry by participating in our fellowship events – especially the Fall Retreat (this year at Camp Hiawatha on October 6-7).
CONFIRMATION COVENANT
As we begin the new academic year together, each parent and student will sign a covenant – an agreement – stating that they understand the expectations of our parish Confirmation ministry. The covenant is also an agreement to abide by basic rules of respect in speaking and behaving, maintaining open communication (including letting the pastor know when you will not be at class/ checking emails/ texts for information, etc.), and agreeing that parents will be actively involved in this ministry.
ATTENDANCE
Please make sure when bringing your child that you are no more than 15 minutes early for their class or event, and that you are on time picking them up. Be aware that if school is canceled on any given day, all church events will also be canceled – no need to call and ask or to be excused.
